Interpretation of the School Motto: “Preserve the Chinese Spirit, Become Global Citizens”
General Secretary Xi Jinping has stated: “The fine traditional Chinese culture, created and passed down over thousands of years, is the root and soul of the Chinese nation.” The “Chinese soul” embodies the deepest spiritual aspirations accumulated throughout the five millennia of the Chinese nation’s development; it contains the most fundamental spiritual DNA of the Chinese people, serves as a unique spiritual symbol of the Chinese nation, and provides the rich nourishment that sustains its enduring vitality and robust growth. It has given rise to a great national spirit centered on patriotism. Driven by profound love for the motherland, the diligent and wise sons and daughters of China have jointly opened up vast territories and forged a splendid and radiant culture. In our contemporary era, as we shoulder the solemn responsibility of realizing the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation, we must cherish our country’s magnificent landscapes and actively safeguard its sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity. This is the bond that unites all the ethnic groups of our nation, the spiritual pillar that sustains the Chinese people’s tireless striving, and the spiritual impetus for achieving national rejuvenation. General Secretary Xi has repeatedly emphasized that traditional Chinese culture is the “root” and “soul” of our nation; to abandon tradition and lose our roots would be tantamount to severing the very lifeline of our spiritual heritage. This, in essence, is the core meaning behind our school motto: “Preserve the Chinese Soul.”
“Be a true international citizen.” The so‑called “international person” refers to globally minded talent. In the specific context of Nanning Oriental Foreign Language Senior High School, it denotes individuals with distinct international characteristics—those who possess an international mindset and broad-mindedness, a robust foundation of international knowledge, a wide‑ranging global perspective and capabilities, and the ability to seize opportunities and take the initiative in an increasingly competitive, globalized world. Such internationally oriented talent should embody the following eight qualities: a broad international outlook and a strong spirit of innovation; mastery of discipline‑specific international knowledge; familiarity with international norms and practices; strong cross‑cultural communication skills; basic competence in independently engaging in international activities; adeptness in gathering, analyzing, and managing information; sound psychological resilience capable of withstanding the challenges of multicultural environments; and high political and ideological awareness, enabling one to resist various temptations and, while embracing an international identity, preserve the dignity and national pride of the Chinese nation. This is what it means to “be a true international citizen.”
Based on the foregoing, the guiding principle of Nanning Oriental Foreign Languages Senior High School—“Preserve the Chinese Spirit, Become Global Citizens”—embodies the following ethos: to remain firmly rooted in China, strive to provide a high school education that meets the expectations of the people, and dedicate itself to cultivating, for the frontier regions of Guangxi, high‑level, application‑oriented talents who possess both a deep sense of national devotion and ethnic pride, as well as a profound grounding in Chinese culture, while also demonstrating an international outlook and broad-mindedness, a sophisticated globalized knowledge base, and expansive perspectives and capabilities—capable of seizing opportunities and taking the initiative in the context of global competition.
Love, great love, the spirit of great love, and a culture of great love
Love, great love, the spirit of great love, and the culture of great love are entirely consistent with the harmonious cultural development championed by our Party; they embody the very essence of harmonious culture, represent the fine tradition and highest ideal of school education, and serve as the guiding values of our institution. “Love” is the very essence of education—without love, there can be no education. Our school actively promotes the spirit of great love and the cultivation of a culture of great love, continuously drawing on the outstanding traditional culture of the Chinese nation and embracing the finest achievements of world civilizations in the course of practice and development, thereby highlighting the distinctive cultural ethos of our high school. As for “love,” there is Confucius’s “benevolent love,” Laozi’s “compassionate love,” Mozi’s “universal love,” Buddhism’s “compassion,” Christianity’s “charitable love,” Muhammad’s “universal love,” and more. Among these, the most influential and far-reaching is undoubtedly Confucius’s “benevolent love,” which possesses universal value.
Benevolence is the core spirit of Confucian thought and the very foundation of human conduct. Confucius was both a proponent and a practitioner of benevolence. He summarized the mission of education as “investigating things, acquiring knowledge, cultivating sincerity, rectifying the mind, self-cultivation, regulating the family, governing the state, and bringing peace to the world.” In terms of his educational audience, he advocated “education for all without distinction”; in his pedagogical approach, he championed “teaching according to individual aptitudes”; and in his attitude toward teaching, he emphasized “never tiring of instructing others.” Confucius maintained that if one could embody the five virtues of respectfulness, magnanimity, trustworthiness, promptness, and benevolence, one might rightly be called a man of aspiration and virtue.
The greatness of a high school lies in its capacity for great love; a high school that embraces great love must, in turn, cultivate even greater compassion. Harvard University holds that the soul of a “university” resides in “great love.” And the “greatness” of this “great love” extends beyond the institution’s care for its faculty.
High school should be a place brimming with warmth and compassion. Only when it is permeated throughout by love—for teachers, for students, for alumni, and for parents—can such a school truly be cherished and remembered, leaving behind countless touching moments.
The great love, the spirit of great love, and the cultural development of great love that our school champions are fully aligned with China’s core socialist values and trace their lineage directly to Confucius’s principle of benevolence. At Nanning Oriental Foreign Languages Senior High School, “love” carries a meaning both profound and far-reaching: first, teachers, students, and staff are called to cherish their own lives, futures, and reputations; second, they are encouraged to foster solidarity and friendship among one another; third, to take pride in their work, dedicate themselves to their duties, and show devotion to their collective and to the school; fourth, to love our country and our nation, aspiring to a prosperous and strong motherland; and fifth, to embrace world peace—a state of mind that embodies “boundless great love,” reflecting the school’s educational philosophy and core values.
